Nobody’s ‘Fool’ – Foghat’s Nick Jameson

Many kids today are discovering Foghat’s “Slow Ride” for the very first time due to the popularity of the video game ‘Guitar Hero’ ®. I first discovered them in the ’70′s, and what drew me to this great band was bassist Nick Jameson, who became one of the primary reasons I wanted to play bass. I later learned that Nick had produced these remarkable recordings as well.

I started searching for Nick Jameson a few months prior to this interview. By Googling his name I found only an actor in LA with no mention whatsoever of being involved with music. Further research confirmed that this actor was the Nick Jameson I had been looking for. He presently portrays the President of Russia on the hit TV show “24″ with Keifer Sutherland.

Nick Jameson’s musicianship was far ahead of his time. To my recollection, he was incorporating funk chops with rock before anyone else. His feel is what moved me when these records came on the radio (records were something we had when I was a kid…). He also had the vision for Foghat at that particular moment in time – as producer he came up with brilliant parts and arrangements.

I would encourage you to take a few minutes to listen with an open and intent ear to Nick’s work on two Foghat singles, “Slow Ride” and “Fool for the City.” His playing and keen ear for production speak for themselves. If these tracks don’t move you then you probably can’t be moved!

Bass Frontiers met up with Nick in late July at his home in the Los Angeles area, and we had a remarkable visit with him and his old bandmate, Foghat drummer Roger Earl. The following interview was conducted off the cuff and was quite informal. I know you will enjoy this video piece as much as we enjoyed filming it.

Watching this interview was so much FUN! I haven’t seen Nick in SO LONG, I had forgotten how purely sweet he is, and I see why he loves Roger so much…birds of a feather! Thank you for posting it! Can’t wait to hear some of that music Nick is doing now..
