Review: Quintin Berry – Hot Hands

Ty Campbell
Bass Frontiers Staff Writer

The new release from Quintin Berry, appropriately titled Hot Hands, shows just how hot the hands are of this up and coming bassist. Quintin has performed with such artists as Percy Sledge, Peabo Bryson, the Cornilus Brothers, Jaco, and is currently performing with The Ugli Stick.

I had the pleasant oppourtunity of meeting Quintin at Summer NAMM this year, and also was thrilled to see him perform at Douglas Corner in Nashville the same weekend as well. For those of you that have not seen Quintin perform, it is quite astounding. Playing bass with his right hand from the bottom, as unorthodox as it may sound, is very cool. I can see why Victor Wooten recommends Quintin, and Victor has even had him as an instructor at his bass camps. Quintin showcases his playing quite well on Hot Hands. Special Guests on Hot Hands are Tom Riepl, guitar on “My Sweet Darling”, and Tim Stanton, drums on “Oh Yeah”

From the funkiness of opening tune “Oh Yeah”, the latin feel of “My Sweet Darling”, and the smooth jazz vibe of “If I Saw Your Face”, you won’t be dissapointed. Hot Hands contains fifteen tunes and is available on iTunes. You can visit Quintin’s site here
