The Rolling Stones-Hot Rocks 1964-1971
Review by: Jodi Stevens
This book contains a great collection of tunes from the Rolling Stones’ early years. It contains the biggest tunes from the band’s first decade together, after they decided to stray away from being a blues/rock cover band back in 1966 (this great bit of history was provided on the first page). Wild Horses and Gimme’ Shelter are two of the twenty-one classics included. This is certainly a “must have” for any Stones fan and/or classic rock enthusiast!
I love Bill Wyman’s driving rock bass lines, which are a huge part part of the Stones’ legendary sound. He’s great at laying down the foundation, such as in Brown Sugar and dressing it up, when it needs to be. I had way too much fun with Sympathy for the Devil. I love his use of syncopation in that line and It was nice to see this side of his playing as well. Players looking for instruction will find the book informative and well written. The book is a nice, easy read. The authors supplied notes and tablature, as well as lyrics, chords, and melody notes. I do miss having a play along CD, especially the kind with the bass in/bass out tracks. This would have been a great addition. Overall a great book and worth the $19.95.
