Upon My Head & LIVE At European Bass Day – Lorenzo Feliciati
Reviews By Brent-Anthony Johnson
Between the humorous hip-hop groove of “Horses,” the deeply Jaco-esque “Dedicated” and the beautiful chord study “Coffee Flavor,” Lorenzo’s fretted and fretless electric bass guitars and his acoustic contrabass sing, spar, dance, weave, and push the musicians on this pair of releases. Upon My Head was released in ’03 and presents a playful soundscape with often treated bass. While ‘06’s LIVE At European Bass Day features incredibly nimble bass playing that nods to Lorenzo’s list of heroes, particularly the aforementioned Jaco Pastorius! Here’s the rub… Lorenzo really does well! Add this one to your “must have” and/or “favorite” lists, folks! Lorenzo is a cat who can really play, and if you haven’t checked him out yet, you’re missing out!
This pair of very well-produced discs made me run for my battered Fender J and begin bumping those bridge-pickup tones, in addition to making me wish I hadn’t missed EBD ’06! Also of important note here, keyboardist Aidan Zammit and drummer Lucrezio de Seta are the perfect support for Lorenzo’s “never miss” and muscular tone-y flights of fancy! As much as he is a great bassist, he is also an incredible composer – even pulling off a convincing “dreamy” for “Alice (a lullaby)”! Great stuff!
Must hear cuts “Thief Like Me” / “Footprints” / “Dedicated”
